Welcome to Get Action!

My name is Herbie Smith.

During the work day, I spend my time taking classes and doing laser plasma research as a full-time physics PhD student. After work, I’m a dedicated reader of entrepreneurship books, personal finance blogs, mindfulness media, and podcasts of all variety. In addition, I spend time with my wife (who is also the editor, social media manager, photographer, and web designer for the blog!), our dog, and our friends, do lots of physical activities, and spend time learning Spanish.

I created this blog because I want to share what I’ve learned about productivity, fulfillment, and positivity from my reading and personal experience. I want to encourage people to take their goals and aspirations seriously and to pursue them with vigor.

The blog takes its name from a quote by¬†Teddy Roosevelt: “Get action; do things; be sane; don’t fritter away your time; create, act, take a place wherever you are and be Somebody; get action.” Colonel Roosevelt lived his extremely accomplished life according to this advice, and we would all do well to try and follow his example.

On this blog, we’ll talk about how to be as dynamic as Roosevelt. I’ll share what I learn, and we’ll explore topics like motivation and applied psychology. We’ll look at how to balance our lives to be productive and happy. We’ll take some time to study some of the most effective people from history and modern times, trying to understand how they make the most of their time. At every step along the way, we’ll keep an eye out for practical wisdom that we can use in our own lives.
